Pressure`s Off: How to Lower Your Blood Pressure Naturally

Posted on September 22nd, 2007

Eat better. This is the hardest step, because it`s the least fun–and also the least surprising. Drastically reducing the amount of red meat, salt and fat in your diet is a challenging task, especially for people without the time to cook for themselves. Approach healthier eating like quitting smoking, and gradually step down to healthier levels of fat, sodium and meat. Adequate hydration is also essential, as it helps ease strain on your circulatory system. There is an upside: Although it raises blood pressure slightly, moderate alcohol intake (of any sort, not just wine) promotes circulatory health–so enjoy some chardonnay with your veggies.

Relax more. Drink that glass of wine while you unwind. Take a solid thirty minutes a day to de-stress and do something you enjoy. Turn off your BlackBerry, read a book, watch some TV, go fishing. And as stressful as puppies can be sometimes, pets have been proven to reduce stress. Petting a cat has been shown to temporarily reduce blood pressure–if you`re a cat person.

Exercise. This is another no-brainer. To seriously lower your blood pressure without medication, cardiovascular exercise will be of utmost importance. It`ll take another thirty minutes a day (or every other day; the most important thing is keeping your heart rate up for at least thirty minutes per session), but it lowers your resting heart rate and raises endorphin levels, which in turn reduce stress. Avoid excessive weight training, though, as it bumps up blood pressure significantly. It might take a month or so to fully see the results of your new-and-improved routine, but it`s hardly a sacrifice–especially since you`re adding healthy years to your life.
